Coljuegos Blocks 10,000 Illegal Gambling Websites and Social Media Accounts
การพนัน (gambling) is a popular activity in Colombia, but the country’s gambling regulator, Coljuegos, is cracking down on illegal operations. Recently, Coljuegos announced that it has blocked a staggering 10,000 unlicensed gambling websites and social media accounts promoting illegal games of chance. This move is part of the regulator’s ongoing efforts to curb illicit gambling activities in the country.
Crackdown on Offshore Entities
The Coljuegos has made it clear that it will not tolerate offshore entities operating in Colombia without the necessary licenses. The regulator is determined to clamp down on illegal gambling products and protect Colombian citizens from the risks associated with unregulated gambling.
The 10,000 entities that Coljuegos blocked included not only online casinos but also digital bingo halls, unregulated sportsbooks, and social media profiles promoting raffles, promotions, and other luck-based games. The regulator is currently pursuing 35 administrative sanctioning processes against illegal gambling promoters, including influencers and online organizations.
Collaboration with Authorities
As part of its latest ban wave, Coljuegos collaborated with the Cybernetic Police Center and the Meta company to block 289 social media profiles on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. These profiles were found to be violating Colombian regulations by offering raffles, bingo games, and promoting illegal online casinos.
Coljuegos reminded the public that unauthorized gambling activities are considered a crime under Colombian law, with operators facing fines of up to 100 times the legal monthly minimum wage. The regulator emphasized that only licensed companies are allowed to provide online gaming services in Colombia.
President’s Support for Crackdown
Marco Emilio Hincapié, President of Coljuegos, highlighted the regulator’s success in combating illegal gambling activities. He stated that the recent ban wave was the largest in the history of Coljuegos, reflecting the authority’s commitment to enforcing the law and protecting Colombian citizens from fraud.
Hincapié noted that Coljuegos’ actions align with President Gustavo Petro’s directives to crack down on fraud and safeguard the well-being and finances of Colombians. The regulator emphasized that legal companies must obtain a license and pay an annual fee to operate in Colombia, with the funds being used for various social causes.
Enforcement of VAT on iGaming
In a related development, the Colombian government has implemented a Value Added Tax (VAT) on online gambling to generate revenue for addressing the humanitarian crisis in Catatumbo. This measure aims to raise funds to assist the more than 39,000 people who have been displaced due to violence in the region.
The government believes that the VAT on online gambling could generate up to $500 million annually. While some have raised concerns about the tax’s long-term economic impact, the authorities are focused on utilizing this revenue to support communities in need and combat illegal gambling activities.
